The Dark Side of Warcraft: Video Gamer Gets Divorced Due to Addiction

Although best-selling online role-playing game World of Warcraft boasts over ten million subscribers, it's also leaving in its wake an increasing list of casualties.

Even though she's never played the game, 28 year-old Jocelyn is one of the fallen. A well-spoken California resident, she divorced her husband of six years after he developed a crippling addiction to the smash online RPG.

"He would get home from work at 6:00, start playing at 6:30, and he'd play until three a.m. Weekends were worse -- it was from morning straight through until the middle of the night," she told Yahoo! Games in an interview. "It took away all of our time that we spent together. I ceased to exist in his life."

Watch World of Warcraft Videos
Watch MMORPG Videos

Jocelyn had been friends with her ex-husband Peter since the age of 13, but it took only nine months for her marriage to collapse.

"I bought the game for him for Christmas 2004, when it first came out. By May we had our first serious discussion about where our marriage was going, and by September I had moved out," she said.

Jocelyn recalled one particular incident that was typical of Peter's habits. "I had set aside 30 minutes for us to watch a television show together, and he couldn't. He was stuck on a raid, and completely failed to understand why I was upset," she said.

Peter's domestic duties also suffered. He stopped paying bills, she says, and refused to do his share of the housework.

Jocelyn doesn't hesitate to cite Warcraft as the main reason for her divorce and remains emotional about its impact on her marriage. "I'm real, and you're giving me up for a fantasy land. You're destroying your life, your six-year marriage, and you're giving it up for something that isn't even real."

Despite their differences, the couple remains friends, and although Peter still plays World of Warcraft, Jocelyn says he made an effort to cut down after their split.

A gamer herself, Jocelyn briefly worked for World of Warcraft developer Blizzard Entertainment, although not on the title that proved so damaging to her relationship. "I recognized that this was a game that would never end, and that's why I chose not to play it," she said.

"They build it in such a way that you have to keep putting more and more time into it to maintain your status. I remember thinking when I was married that it was downright exploitative to people who couldn't control themselves in that way. It's set up like a drug."

Asked if she would consider marrying another Warcraft player, Jocelyn laughed. "That's actually one of my primary criteria now -- I don't want to marry someone who is a gamer."

w00t is Merriam-Webster's word of '07

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Expect cheers among hardcore online game enthusiasts when they learn Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year. Or, more accurately, expect them to "w00t."

"W00t," a hybrid of letters and numbers used by gamers as an exclamation of happiness or triumph, topped all other terms in the Springfield-based dictionary publisher's online poll for the word that best sums up 2007.

Merriam-Webster's president, John Morse, said "w00t" was an ideal choice because it blends whimsy and new technology.

"It shows a really interesting thing that's going on in language. It's a term that's arrived only because we're now communicating electronically with each other," Morse said.

Gamers commonly substitute numbers and symbols for the letters they resemble, Morse says, creating what they call "l33t speak" — that's "leet" when spoken, short for "elite" to the rest of the world.

For technophobes, the word also is familiar from the 1990 movie "Pretty Woman," in which Julia Roberts startles her date's upper-crust friends with a hearty "Woot, woot, woot!" at a polo match.

Hackers Unlock Censored Violence In Manhunt 2

by peter svensson, ap

NEW YORK - Hackers have unlocked violent content that was censored by the publisher of the game "Manhunt 2" to give it a marketable rating, the company confirmed Thursday.

The game, initially given an "Adults Only" rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, went on sale in the U.S. on Wednesday with a "Mature" rating, after being modified. Most stores refuse to carry "Adults Only" games; Mature means a game is intended for player 17 or older.

Game publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. and the studio that designed the game, Rockstar Games, have long been at the center of the debate over video game violence and children.

Two years ago, a hacker uncovered a hidden sex scene in their game "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas."

In "Manhunt 2," the player takes the role of a man who escapes from an insane asylum and goes on a killing spree.

Take-Two edited parts of the game, including blurring some of the most gruesome killing scenes, to get the less restrictive rating.

Hackers defeated that blurring on the version of the game for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation Portable. The game is also available for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii systems, and those versions do not appear to have been hacked.

The hack does not roll back all the changes that enabled the game to qualify for the "Mature" rating, and it requires some technical expertise and a PSP unit that is itself hacked to accept modified software.

In the Grand Theft Auto incident, the ratings board changed the game's rating from "Mature" to "Adults Only" and retailers pulled it off shelves.

Since then, the board has required that publishers submit even hidden content for review, and Take-Two spokesman Ed Nebb said the publisher had followed that requirement for "Manhunt 2."

It is unclear whether the private, nonprofit ratings board considered the hidden material in assigning the "M" rating to "Manhunt 2."

Board spokesman Eliot Mizrachi said only that it is aware of the hacking issue and is looking into it.

Common Sense Media, a nonprofit group that advises parents about media content and games that may be inappropriate for children, on Thursday asked the Federal Trade Commission to look into the ESRB's ratings process and its evaluation of "Manhunt 2" in particular.

The advocacy group noted that even the revised version of the game was banned by the American ratings board's British counterpart.

"I stand behind the game and the ESRB ratings process," Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick said in a statement. "It is unfortunately the case that no one in the entertainment software industry is immune from hacking. We hope that consumers will not engage in hacking or download illegally modified copies of our games."

More:
Official Site
Video Game Trailer
Wikipedia Entry

Get Your Duel On

I wanted to take quick moment to introduce you to Duels, a new text-based and flash fusion game where you build a character and fight in an arena. While there are quest to do they are not intensive like many MMORPG's and there is absolutely no grinding, unless you call whoopin ass in an arena grinding. You get gold, exp and even items for fighting.

You start by building an 'Avatar' or character. You can customize your Avatar's face, body build, race, hair style and color and tatoos. After building your avatar you go through a few quick quest. No worries you wont be tromping through text-based jungles to find a key or anything. The first few quest are designed to help you learn the interface and how to fight in the arena. After that it's pretty much just battling NPC Avatars for EXP, gold and goodies.

Once you get the hang of it you start figuring out how to use 'Packs' and how to us the 'loadout' to adjust your characters weapons and armor for each individual fight.

After you challenge someone and/or accept a challenge you can view the fight results in a flash video. The results are randomly decided based on the defense and attack stats and any scrolls tossed into the mix.

Drawbacks:
- A limited selection of avatar features including only allowing the Male gender (chicks can fight too)
- The fights are shown in a bland and non-exciting flash environment. C'mon i spend time building and customizing my avatar and all I get to see is a shadow of it fighting on the same background over and over.
- The 'power rating' is poorly explained and can be a bit confusing at first. I have seen Avatars of the same level power rating vary about 75 points, a big difference in this game.
- A person you challenge can wait indefinitely to accept or reject your challenge. Couple this with the ability of everyone to see your level, path and items and you have a recipe for people scamming the system and waiting to accept the challenge when they are a higher level or better equipped. This means you can challenge someone when you are both lvl 3, but you go to sleep and the lvl to 5 and then decide to accept the challenge and handily defeat you.

This is a great game if you are somewhere like school or work where you dont have the graphics power to play your favorite game and you want a quick killing fix. It can get surprisingly addictive challenging and accepting challenges although the fight scenes get irritatingly dull.

Start Playing Now:
Duels.com

Fight RadioRevolt.com Avatars:
imabeatyouup
crackedout

Chicago Chimera powered into first place of the CGS last night after drubbing 3D.NY 31-15. Chicago's dynamic PGR duo set the pace for the evening and the Counter-Strike and DOA squads followed suit.
